It's the Year of Linux on Light Strips

This piece for the Monthly Log was supposed to be a different one. In the latest issue of MacStories Weekly, I wrote about how I installed a Bluetooth-powered RGB light strip on my balcony and my idea for making it HomeKit-compatible by using either Homebridge or Home Assistant. I thought that was going to be an easy task. Silly me.

I’m writing this after spending the past four days trying to make sense of Bluetooth Low Energy connections, old Homebridge plugins, and a Home Assistant integration that should work with my light strip in theory, but in practice, it don’t. I’m about to give up on this whole thing, but there is one glimmer of hope that, somehow, is pushing me to continue down this rabbit hole.
