Creating a Multi-Purpose Lock Screen Launcher with Shortcuts
Among the many Lock Screen widgets that launched alongside iOS 16 last year, one was conspicuous in its absence: Shortcuts. Although there are third-party developers who have created clever Lock Screen widgets that can open your iPhone, switch to the Shortcuts app, and launch your shortcut, the friction created made the experience impractical.
Luckily, iOS 17 will add a Shortcuts widget for the Lock Screen. This new feature immediately set me on a path to creating something I’ve wanted since Lock Screen widgets were introduced – a multi-purpose Quick Launcher to quickly start actions without ever opening my iPhone. Then, I went a step further and incorporated Focus modes to make the setup even more flexible.
