The Sonos Roams in my living room.

A while back, the folks at Sonos sent me two Sonos Roam review units, which I’ve been trying at my desk and in my living room for the past few weeks. In case you’re not familiar with the product, the Roam is different from the Move that John wrote about last week in MacStories Weekly. The Sonos Roam is a smaller device that resembles a traditional portable Bluetooth speaker: you can toss it in a bag without much care for its footprint, or you can place it on a desk in upright position like I did. The peculiarity of the Sonos Roam is that it can be used both at home over Wi-Fi as part of a regular Sonos system with support for AirPlay or as a classic Bluetooth device when you’re not at home.

Sonos sent me two Roams, which I knew I wanted to set up as a stereo pair and use at home rather than on the go. Setup from the Sonos app was easy, and, I have to say, I am impressed with the sound quality of these two small devices. To my ears, a pair of Sonos Roams sounds better than a pair of HomePod minis; especially when placed on a desk on opposite sides of a display (like I did with my Studio Display in the middle and one Roam on each side, facing me), they make for excellent desktop companions with a good amount of bass and Sonos’ typical sound signature.
