Building a Markdown- and MP3-Based Read-Later System

Last week on MacStories, I wrote about how I mark articles for reading later by adding a star to them in Reeder. My RSS sync service, Feedbin, creates a dedicated RSS feed of those starred items, which I can then add to any read-later app that supports RSS feeds, like Matter and Readwise Reader.

Feeding starred items back into Reeder for its widget.

Since that story went live, I’ve heard from readers who have different systems, which I love to hear about because it shows how versatile RSS is. Another example is a solution to a problem I came up with last weekend. I wanted a widget for my read-later articles. Readwise Reader doesn’t offer widgets (or really, just about any recent iOS-specific features), and Reeder has widgets but doesn’t include one for starred items. So, I created my own by subscribing to my Feedbin starred items feed in Reeder and then picking it as the source in Reeder’s large widget. With the flexibility of RSS, it’s easy to find a way to build what you want, whether the apps you use support it directly or not.
