Breaking Up Shortcuts for Maximum Flexibility

During the 2021-22 holiday break, I went a little overboard with Obsidian and Shortcuts in an attempt to automate every aspect of the documents I create each week. I dove into the Obsidian Dataview plugin and created templates triggered by shortcuts in an attempt to generate shells of the dozen or so documents I create in any week with a single tap or click.

The trouble was the system was too rigid. It worked well for a typical week, but I learned that I don’t have many ‘typical’ weeks. I may do many of the same things every week, but how I go about those tasks varies in a lot of little ways that led to my overly clever system breaking down pretty quickly.
