Syncing Dolphin Between Windows and macOS with Dropbox and Symbolic Links

A couple of weeks ago on MacStories Unwind, I talked about my experiments with Dolphin, an amazing emulator for Nintendo GameCube and Nintendo Wii that is available on a wide variety of platforms, including Windows and macOS. As I explained, one of the best features of Dolphin is its ability to upscale the resolution of old games and install higher-quality texture packs. In practice, this means you can take a 20 year-old game such as Metroid Prime, which ran at 480p on GameCube, and play it at native 4K on a MacBook Pro or TV with AI-enhanced textures and, say, a Bluetooth controller such as a DualSense. It’s wild what you can do with Dolphin these days, and I also recommend checking out the project’s fantastic development blog if you’re into this sort of topic.

As I covered on Unwind, I’ve been splitting my time with Dolphin between two different devices: the M1 Max MacBook Pro and the AYANEO, a Windows-based handheld that is like a Steam Deck but not made by Valve. I love playing with Dolphin on these two computers for different reasons: the AYANEO’S Switch-like form factor gives me the freedom to play PC games anywhere; the MacBook Pro’s incredible performance lets me run GameCube games at native 4K and 60 fps without any issues whatsoever (seriously, the M1 Max is just ridiculous). This posed an interesting problem, though:
