Spotify Shortcuts for Media Playback, Lyrics, and Playlists
Later this week in the January issue of the Monthly Log, I’m going to cover some of the unappreciated features of Spotify, which I’ve been using as my primary music streaming service for nearly two months now. Today, I want to cover one area where Spotify falls short compared to Apple Music: its non-existent Shortcuts integration.
While Apple’s music service comes with native Shortcuts actions to get access to the user’s library (see: MusicBot) and a variety of third-party apps that provide actions for the Apple Music API (see: Toolbox Pro), Spotify doesn’t come with any Shortcuts action whatsoever and I’ve struggled to find third-party utilities that integrate with Spotify and offer their own Shortcuts actions. This has made the task of extending Spotify with custom shortcuts challenging, but not impossible.
