Sending Custom Push Notifications with Alerty and Shortcuts

Earlier this week on MacStories, I mentioned Alerty, a relatively new web service that allows you to send push notifications to an API and have them delivered to all your devices signed into the Alerty website. What’s unique about Alerty, and the reason why I wanted to do something with it this Friday, is that it’s one of the first services I’ve seen to support the new ability in iOS and iPadOS 16.4 to send push notifications to a web app saved on the Home Screen.

As I detailed earlier this week on MacStories, all you need to do is log into Alerty once it’s saved on your Home Screen, give it permission to send you push notifications, and you’re set. The app will show up as an option in Settings, Focus modes, and other places where you can control notifications, just like any other native app that can send you notifications. As I also hinted on MacStories, I wanted to explain how you can program Alerty to send you custom push notifications, as well as how you can fit the service into existing home automations, which is what I’m going to in this column today.
