BEHIND THE SCENES

Behind the Scenes of the iOS and iPadOS 14 Review's 3D Graphics and Animation by Brian King

Brian: Every time we see an iPhone or iPad in an illustration, any given UI element on that device is an image inside a display inside an image in the window of your own display. Sometimes, those pictures of displays are sitting next to other pictures of displays. With so much attention in iOS 14 being given to widgets and other compact UI elements, it was important to remove a little bit of that disconnect and make tiny graphic elements large enough to study and appreciate as independent entities.

Building this test render helped me realize that iOS widgets and compact UI elements don’t depend on the context of a Home Screen or a larger app layout to be functional or look good. They feel just as good freely floating in 3D space as they do inside an iPhone. This understanding put me on track to begin building the Home Screen illustration as my first composition for this year’s review. I re-built more widgets in Figma, pulled them into Cinema 4D, and started staging them under the ever-present floating iPhones.
