Backing Up My Collection of Old GameCube and Wii Games

As you know, lately I’ve been busy ripping my collection of old Nintendo GameCube and Wii games to digital formats that I can play via emulators or, even better, original hardware that loads games from USB storage rather than discs. (This is a story for another time.) Today, I thought I’d offer some tips for Club members who may be interested in performing personal backups of their legally-owned games for archival purposes.

For GameCube and Wii games, I knew I’d have to use a modded Wii. There is a surprisingly active homebrew community around the Wii despite its age, with hackers and developers still making apps and other utilities for those who have jailbroken their Wiis. To give you an idea of what I mean, there is a ChatGPT client for the Wii that lets you chat with OpenAI’s assistant using the Wiimote. (Why not?) Going into this experiment, I knew I’d find ways to use the Wii itself as a tool to make backups of Wii discs as well as the GameCube’s mini-DVDs thanks to the console’s backwards compatibility.
